Basement Redo...

After 2 months of hard work, we can FINALLY enjoy our new basement!! here are the before and after pics.  Tell me what you think!!

Steps of the process:
1.  We cleared everything out of the basement.
1.1 I forgot - We had Doug Martin come and put new lighting in before we did the ceiling.
2. Blair sprayed painted the ceiling with flat black paint with a sprayer.
3. We had all our family come help us paint the walls tan/gray and wall pipes black.
4. We trimmed the bottom brick of the walls black to look like trim.
5.  We leveled a floor drain where the Tv is now sitting.
6.  We painted the floor and the stairs.
7.  Once the basement was nicely painted and clean... we started on the wall. ( the wall that divided the two parts of the basement:  the laundry rm and living rm.)  Troy, Blair and Seth studded up the wall, put in a new header by the store room door, put in a door, and drywalled.
8. Blair and Jeff put up the beadboard.
9. Blair and I painted and put up the trim.
10.  Then mom and I cleaned and put the final paint touches on the wall and trim.
11. Finally we moved our furniture down and have been settling in for the past 2 weeks.

Enjoy the pics!!

AFTER:

the runner is from Ballard Design.

We hung a curtain to separate the laundry room.  This view is right around the stairs to the left.

There are some pipes running along the wall that we decided to paint black to make more of a feature.  This is one of Blair's favorite parts of the new basement.

Here is the laundry room.  The washer and dryer were there and we added the counter unit to the left.

This was a fun project because it was free! these were all pieces that we already had and painted/cut down to fit the purpose of our new laundry room.  It is a nice folding table.

This area is behind the air conditioner and became a nice little store room.

This is Dela's new play area.  Its right off the laundry room so it makes it easier for me to do laundry with Dela.  The kitchen was a gift from Gma and Gpa Hoerr.

Here is the living room area.  All the furniture was stuff we got from other people.  The small couch is from Blair's parents and the big one is from mine.  We had the tv and cabinet from our college apartment.  And the end table is from my parents as well.  So in this area, the only thing we purchased was the cream slipcover, the pillows, the lamp and a few small accessories.

This was the hardest project, but the most rewarding when it was done!! It took us two days to do it.  Blair mixed the mortar and laid the bricks, while I cleaned up the grout lines behind him.  My dad helped us alot too!!  I have to say this is my favorite part of the basement!! It just looks so original to the house.

This is the black ceiling we spray painted black.

This is Dela and my craft area.

This is the beadboard wall we put up.

Thank you to all who helped us produce this amazing basement redo!!
We appreciate all you did for us!

  2. Please tell me more details of how you painted the ceiling. We want to do this too but it looks like it would be difficult. Did you do it yourself or have someone else do it? What products did you use? How did you protect everything else from getting sprayed? Any other details you want to share would be wonderful!

    1. Its not too difficult. We did it or I should say that Blair did it one Saturday. It took him half a day to do it. We borrowed a paint sprayer from some friends that had just done the same thing to their basement ceiling. We used flat black paint and it took us about 7 or 8 gallons. We didn't have really anything down there when we sprayed except our washer and dryer and the heating and air cond. So we covered the washer/dryer with some plastic and hung some plastic in front of doors and heating/air stuff. It worked pretty good cuz we were planning on painted the walls and floor anyways. So we didn't have to be super careful but i would suggest still laying down plastic and moving it with you as you paint. It will save you sometime with clean up. We had to scrub the floors to get the paint residue off the floors before we painted them. So...for us, this was the best option and it work well. Also, what is nice about it is you only have to do one coat because when the lights are on you can't see any imperfections. And also you would need to tape up any lights before you start and make sure that everything you want done to the ceiling is done before you start. Otherwise you'll have to touch it up with black paint later.

Hope that helps!! if you have any more questions dont hestitate to ask!! :)
      Happy redoing!
